Though I spent the majority of my second trip to beautiful Barcelona trip burdened by an unwanted cold (which I’m still battling), the endless splendor of Barcelona is the cure for all. Unlike other cities in Europe, Barcelona’s culture isn’t watered down by globalism and tourism but rather the fierce pride of the Catalonians keep this city’s energy and Spanish soul thriving. From famous Gaudi-saturated architecture to the endless tapas, sangria and fierce Spanish sunshine…a trip to Barcelona is a must for everyone with Mediterranean wanderlust.
Here are 20 things to do in Barcelona, AKA the ultimate Barcelona bucket list!

Walk Down Las Ramblas
One of Barcelona’s most energetic streets, Las Ramblas is the center of all the city’s action. Come here to stroll, people watch (prime spot for this), discover Barcelona’s vibe and everything in betweeen.
Enjoy the Incredible View from Park Güell
I’m a bit ashamed to say that I didn’t make this trek until my second round in Barcelona. I was a bit put off by the schools of tourists but stepping into Gaudi’s brilliant architectual fantasy land was everything. Oh, and that view from the top, priceless.
Drink Sangria at a Barceloneta Beach Bar
There are two things that ALWAYS go together: Sangria and beach time. Walk down Barceloneta’s boardwalk and choose one of the many casual beach cafes and bars. Red, white, pitcher, glass — it’s hard to go wrong with Sangria in Spain.
Get a Massage While Sunbathing on Barceloneta Beach
No one tells you about this, but while sunbathing at Barceloneta beach, among the wandering mojito and cerveza vendors there is a very special offer: a €10 for a 20-minute massage. I’m not sure why ALL beaches on this planet don’t do this but to describe it as ultimate luxury is an understatement. DO IT.
Be Awed by Sagrada Familia
Visiting historic churches is usually on the Europe itinerary but the inconceivable architecture of the “sacred family” church makes it my favorite in the world. Once you see it, you’ll know why.
Indulge in Catalonian-Style Bread
Toasted bread with tomato, garlic and olive oil on top. Simple? Yes. Could I survive off of this stuff? Definitely.
Take a Day Trip to Montserrat
If you have to make one day trip from Barcelona, it should definitely be Montserrat! The breathtaking mountain formations and monastary experience is the best way to enjoy Catalonia’s stunning landscape and religious history at the same time.
See a Flamenca Show
Because when in Spain…
Admire the Gothic Quarter
Get lost in the winding streets of Barcelona’s old world. Go early in the morning to make this enchanting experienc even more remarkable (no tourists).
Experience Catalonian Pride at Barcelona Football Game
If planning your trip in advance, there is no better way to experience the spirit of the Catalonian people. Grab tickets to one of Barcelona’s football matches for the sporting experience of a lifetime.
Visit the Picasso Museum
Only Museu Picasso is worth spending a few hours away from the Spanish sun. Entry is free on Sundays.
Grab a Juice (and all other Spanish food goodness) at La Boqueria
Spain celebrates fruit and I’m on board with that! If juice isn’t your thing, cool off with all-natural popsicles, sample Jamon or have a tapas feast at one of the many delicious eateries in La Boqueria.
Sit Down and Relax in Plaça Reial
The equivelant of Piazza Navona in Rome, palm tree lined Plaça Reial deserves to be strolled through and savored.
Eat Traditional Paella
I’m vegetarian most of the time but I give myself a freebie here and there when it comes to must-try national dishes. For Spain, that’s definitely seafood Paella. The recipe behind this delicious rice dish is beyond me but I know they add wine. Om nom to the extreme.
The best Paella I’ve had in Barcelona: Restaurante Can Solé – Carrer de Sant Carles 4
Picnic in Ciutadella Park
I’m a firm believer that Spain should be experienced from the outdoors (but maybe that’s just my cold Germany bones talking). Ciutadella Park is stunning both naturally and architecturally and makes the perfect spot for an impromptu Spanish picnic.
Eat Churros with Hot Chocolate
The Spanish hot chocolate is ever so slightly different than the hot chocolate we are used to — instead of the milky delight we expect, the Spanish way is thick and dreamy melted chocolate which is socially acceptable to drink. Plus Churros to dip in it. Everything.
If you’re looking for the best churros in Barcelona, here is my recommendation.
Admire More of Gaudi’s Work on Passeig de Gracia
Witness more of Gaudi’s famed work along the Passeig de Gracia — psst, and spontaneous shopping.
Eat Tapas Every Day
Aside from Paella, skip the big meal. Eat Tapas. All day, every day.
See a Concert
I have a very small bucket list of artists to see live and Coldplay was one of them. My best friend surprised me with tickets to their Barcelona show and it attached another incredibly beautiful memory to this amazing city. If your favorite band is visiting Barcelona, welcome it as a reason to visit.
Sleep on a Yacht
I’m all about the once-in-awhile unique accomodation induldgence. There are quite a few overnight yachts and boats on Airbnb and sleeping soundly in Barcelona’s port is a fun (and potentially romantic) experience to make your Catalonian excursion all the more memorable.
